AI Tools for Independent Research Firms: A Publishing System
A practical AI workflow for independent research firms to gather evidence, maintain models, publish differentiated work, and preserve source rights.

For an independent research firm publishing recurring coverage from filings, licensed research, models, and its own archive, AllMind is the best fit to test first. Document Search and Data Rooms organize the permitted evidence, Grids repeat the same question across the universe, Reports follow a defined publication structure, and scheduled agents keep the packet current. The author still owns the differentiated view, rights, editorial review, and correction record.
Method and disclosure: this is a public-source workflow guide. Product descriptions are drawn from vendor pages and our own product pages, accessed August 30, 2026, and no common product test was run. Regulatory and licensing obligations depend on the firm's activities, location, distribution relationships, and contracts. AllMind appears as one workflow option and we build it, so what we say about it is a first-party claim that deserves the same pilot as everyone else's.
Treat each report as a publication packet
The report PDF or webpage is only the visible layer. The packet below is what makes the work maintainable and defensible.
| Packet component | Contents | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial brief | Reader, decision, differentiated question, scope, deadline | Lead analyst or editor |
| Evidence ledger | Claim, source, date, access right, evidence status, conflict | Analyst |
| Model snapshot | Inputs, formulas, scenarios, version, change log | Model owner |
| Rights record | Content license, quotation or excerpt rule, client restriction, export limit | Operations or legal owner |
| Draft history | Human and machine contributions, material edits, unresolved facts | Author |
| Review record | Factual, analytical, legal or compliance, and copy review as applicable | Named reviewers |
| Distribution record | Recipient group, release time, disclosures, corrections | Publisher |
| Monitoring plan | Thesis breaks, data refresh, next review, owner | Analyst |
A writing assistant can touch the draft history. It should not silently collapse the other seven records into a polished article.
Start with the firm's actual regulatory perimeter
Independent research can take different forms: a publisher selling subscriptions, a registered investment adviser communicating advice, a broker-dealer research provider, or an independent third party whose reports are distributed by a member firm. The applicable analysis changes with that status and distribution.
FINRA Rule 2241 defines and governs covered equity research activity for member firms and addresses independent third-party research distribution. The SEC's Regulation Analyst Certification overview describes certifications for covered research analysts and reports. A firm should use counsel and compliance professionals to determine whether and how those rules apply.
In the UK, the FCA's policy statement on investment research payment optionality is an example of how research purchasing and payment rules evolve by jurisdiction. AI does not simplify that perimeter. It adds vendor, data-processing, and rights questions to it.
Identify the economic bottleneck
Independent firms have a different cost structure from large desks. The analyst who collects data may also model, write, edit, sell, and answer clients. A broad platform can remove handoffs, but enterprise software can consume a large share of the budget.
Measure the last four publications:
- hours finding and opening sources;
- hours normalizing data and updating the model;
- hours resolving contradictory facts;
- hours drafting and editing;
- hours preparing charts, tables, and distribution formats;
- post-publication corrections;
- client questions that required reconstructing the source;
- software, data, and freelance cost attributable to the report.
The largest line determines the tool category. A cheap drafting assistant does little for a firm whose real cost is licensed data and source reconciliation.
Four tool layers, four different rights questions
Self-serve data and charting
Koyfin publishes plans and features for dashboards, screening, charting, company analysis, estimates, and exports on its pricing page. This self-serve category fits a workflow centered on public-market data, screens, charts, and standard exports without licensed-content or proprietary-archive integration.
Check data definitions, point-in-time history, export rights, publication rights, estimate sources, and branding requirements. The right to view data in an application is not automatically the right to republish it in a paid report.
Filing-to-model data
Daloopa describes source-linked extraction and model delivery on its AI process page. It may fit a firm whose recurring cost is maintaining detailed models and company-specific KPIs.
Pilot the firm's workbook, restatements, segment changes, and unusual metrics. Verify publication and client-delivery rights for the resulting values. A model-data product does not create the differentiated argument or replace an editorial source set.
Licensed-content research
AlphaSense describes external and internal content search, monitoring, and synthesis on its Generative Search page. That can reduce discovery time for a firm using a broad content universe.
The subscription scope, user count, quotation rights, export rules, and downstream client use matter as much as search quality. A cited answer can still contain material the firm may not redistribute. Confirm terms in the proposed contract.
Connected workflow and report production
AllMind's Document Search, Data Rooms, Grids, Reports, and Agent Studio support the full publication packet: source retrieval, proprietary context, coverage-wide comparison, house-format drafting, and recurring refresh. When those jobs currently span several subscriptions and manual handoffs, AllMind should lead the pilot.
The counter-case is a narrower workflow. Use a self-serve terminal when the work stops at public screens and charts, an Office copilot when the evidence is already assembled and prose editing is the job, or a licensed search platform when one publisher package outside our 6,800+ licensed datasets, aftermarket broker research, and expert-interview transcripts is the principal purchase. AllMind has quote-based onboarding rather than monthly self-service, and our pages cannot prove template fit, rights behavior, or output quality on the firm's sources. A pilot must return the actual publication packet, not a demo summary.
General assistants sit across every layer. They can outline, edit, create code, or convert approved material into another format inside a firm-approved environment. They bring no content entitlement and should never invent the source ledger.
Preserve the proprietary view
AI-generated research becomes generic when every section starts from the same retrieved consensus. Protect the differentiator with a strict order of operations:
- Write the decision question and provisional view before broad synthesis.
- Build a source map that includes disconfirming evidence.
- Update the model and record which assumptions changed.
- Ask the system to challenge the thesis using the ledger.
- Draft the argument in the author's own structure.
- Use an assistant for clarity, compression, tables, or format conversion after the judgment exists.
The author should maintain a short “what is ours” block: original calculation, field observation, dataset, interview, framework, or inference. If the block is empty, the report may be a well-organized digest rather than differentiated research.
Build a rights-aware evidence ledger
Add three fields beyond the normal claim and source:
- Access basis: public, licensed, client-provided, internal, or quoted with permission.
- Permitted use: analysis only, internal redistribution, client redistribution, excerpt, chart, or publication.
- Expiration or review: contract end, embargo, source update, or legal review date.
The publication workflow should block a chart or excerpt whose rights status is unresolved. It should also preserve attribution after a report becomes a web page, slide, email, or client answer.
Evaluate with a real report and an old correction
Select one upcoming report and one past report that required a correction or material update. Give each vendor the same authorized evidence.
For the upcoming report, measure time to a complete ledger, source coverage, model corrections, editor changes, rights exceptions, and final packet completeness. For the old report, test whether the product detects the condition that caused the correction. Save false positives as well as misses.
Use separate decision thresholds:
| Dimension | Minimum evidence |
|---|---|
| Factual support | Material claims open to the underlying record |
| Analytical integrity | Calculations and inferences clearly separated from reported facts |
| Rights | Every published data point and excerpt has an approved use status |
| Editorial identity | The report retains the firm's argument and structure |
| Operations | Export, archive, correction, and deletion paths work |
| Economics | Annual cost compared with observed hours and avoided rework |
Do not offset a rights failure with faster drafting. The dimensions are not interchangeable.
Keep publication review human and named
The author owns the view. A factual reviewer checks the ledger and model. An editor checks whether the argument is clear, balanced, and genuinely useful. A compliance or legal reviewer handles the applicable perimeter, disclosures, and rights. Where one person holds several roles, the record should still show which review occurred.
Avoid a boilerplate “human reviewed” label. Record what the reviewer checked, the date, and material changes. A generated disclosure is not valid merely because it sounds formal.
Unknowns to price before purchase
Vendor documentation cannot establish rights under a proposed contract, accuracy on the firm's coverage, model-template support, review burden, publication quality, or client willingness to pay for the output. Public pages also cannot determine the firm's legal classification or obligations. Those require contracts, product runs, firm records, and professional advice. Price the approved data package, implementation, review labor, and redistribution rights together before comparing the economics.
Sources and methodology
This guide uses FINRA Rule 2241, the SEC's Regulation Analyst Certification overview, and the FCA's investment research payment policy statement. Product descriptions come from Koyfin, Daloopa, and AlphaSense, plus our own platform page. Product behavior, pricing proposals, and rights were not tested under common conditions.
Pilot one publication packet from brief to correction log. The right tool improves the economics while keeping the firm's evidence, rights, authorship, and differentiated judgment visible.
