General Motors: Great Setup Heading Into 2027

GM secured 100% of Thacker Pass Phase 1 lithium output for 20 years, targeting battery-grade supply for up to 1M EVs annually, reinforcing its EV input advantage. Q2 2026 delivered $48B revenue, $3.57 adjusted EPS, and $5B free cash flow, and the company raised 2026 guidance on strong execution. The combination of earnings outperformance and improved outlook supports a bullish near-to-medium term view.

Analysis

The real takeaway is that GM is reducing a hidden source of earnings volatility: input security in the battery supply chain. That matters less for this quarter than for the next 12-18 months because it narrows the probability distribution on EV gross margin, even if EV penetration stays uneven. Competitively, that is a negative for OEMs leaning on merchant battery materials or offshore supply chains; the second-order winner is any domestic battery/cell partner whose volumes become more visible and financeable once GM has committed offtake.

The bigger near-term equity story is still the ICE cash engine. If GM can keep converting truck/SUV demand into repeatable free cash flow, buybacks become the mechanism that can offset the market's usual fear of cyclical peak earnings. That creates a better setup than a pure EV name: investors are effectively paying for a durable cash stream plus an embedded EV option, which can support multiple expansion if guidance proves conservative over the next 1-2 earnings prints.

The contrarian risk is that the lithium narrative is being treated as more immediately accretive than it is. Securing output does not solve battery chemistry shifts, conversion bottlenecks, or demand elasticity; if EV adoption slows or lithium prices stay weak, the strategic value of the offtake looks more like optionality than a direct EPS driver. Falsifiers: a downgrade to 2026 FCF or buyback pace, North American auto SAAR deterioration, or evidence that battery ASPs are not falling despite the offtake.

A cleaner trade is to own GM versus a less disciplined legacy OEM or versus an unprofitable EV pure-play basket, where GM's cash generation and capital returns should defend downside better in a soft tape. Timing matters: this is best bought on any post-earnings consolidation rather than chasing a gap higher, since the market may need a few weeks to underwrite how much of the lithium story is real versus promotional.
